Here we are again, a brand spanking new year!
It’s so exciting and everything feels fresh and new, even though “technically” we only turned a page in the calendar or, for some of us, cracked open a shiny new one Santa brought us. While that is all true, a new year almost always means whatever we may have put on hold before a holiday break can no longer wait and needs our attention now.
I don’t necessarily set resolutions, I set myself a focus for the year. And I set my planning up for the year to work towards and around that focus, and I’m driven by that fresh motivation.
So let’s take advantage of this energy we have coming into this new year and get set up for success. It’s been said that the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results (fun fact, it was not Albert Einstein who said this). Your hiring strategy is no different, whatever you were doing in 2023 that didn’t quite hit, it’s time to put that away and look at the whole process with different eyes.
Let’s look at an example.
I used to work with a hiring manager who had seasonal recruitment needs, 4 times per year. Every time the new hiring period came up, it was like a surprise to them.
Each time, I tried to catch up with them to try and get them to set a strategy, and get proactive. I would encourage them to start their recruitment process early every time, to ensure they weren’t experiencing high stress to fill their peak season, and every time they would put it off until the absolute last minute and we’d scramble again (definition of insanity). The recruitment process was the same every time, but we had to scramble every time, as they just couldn’t set anything in place.
That was true until one year they had had enough! We met at the start of the year and designed a strategy to support them to recruit in increments throughout the year. What a revelation! No longer did we have a last minute push for seasonal help and everyone, including the teams worked more effectively.
I want this for you too.
So let’s talk HIRING STRATEGY.
I have a digital download, called Your 3 Step Guide & Workbook to Set Your Strategy Before you dive into this workbook, I want to give you some homework to think about to create the framework for your hiring strategy. Below are some questions to help you to understand where you are at and what you need to start thinking about.
Plan your needs in advance:
Where did you experience greatest demands in your business
Are you expecting any changes in your business supply
Where would you like to reduce some burden?
Are you hoping to expand into new areas?
Consider your current team:
Does your current team have the skills to deliver on your goals?
Do they want to develop and take on more responsibility?
Do they have any significant periods of leave planned?
Think about your mistakes in hiring last year:
Did you have difficulty finding the right team member?
Did you recruit when it was too late and you were already under too much pressure?
Is there something you promised yourself you’d do differently this year?
Making time to do it right or engaging great help:
Creating time either in the week, the month or throughout the year
Plan your timeline in advance, starting with when you want to hire and working backwards including notice period, interviewing time, advertising time.
Engaging experienced support to ensure you’re not alone
So if you would like 2024 to be the year of working smarter, not harder, and you’d really love to create a robust plan that will see you being fully prepared when it comes time to hire, then you’re in good company and I want to help you get there.
