Let’s Break Down Barriers to Hiring

Overcome Time, Money, Knowledge and Confidence Challenges like a Pro!

panel interview

It’s no secret that hiring has many facets and requires using different skill sets at different times. It can be daunting, and the barriers can feel like mountains, instead of what they could be, just little bumps in the road to navigate. We’ll break down some of the key barriers and some strategies on how to work through them so that you can smoothly sail your recruitment journey with confidence!

Time Constraints

Whether you’re a small business owner or an HR Manager, you are most likely time poor. You have your primary responsibilities and recruitment seems like one of those things that takes away from your critical tasks. But it is important and rushing a recruitment process can lead to rushing decisions, missing out on good candidates and potentially making hiring mistakes.

Some ideas to help you move through this are:

Streamline your process - automate what you can, simplify what you can and make sure you go into a recruitment process with a plan.

Prioritise your tasks/time - identify prior to commencing a recruitment process which tasks you want to spend more or less time on so you don’t overlook a critical step, but don’t waste time on things that can be outsourced or done more quickly.

Money, Money, Money

Money is always a consideration whether you’re a large business, a small established business or a start-up. Making the most out of your process with the least financial commitment will always be a consideration. It’s not cheap either, you have to stay competitive with salary, advertising can be expensive, your time is expensive too. So getting through it without breaking the bank is critical.

So how can you minimise this risk?

Optimise your Advertising - focus on cost-effect advertising, consider social media, referrals, or specialised job boards tailored to reaching a specific audience rather than the masses.

Smart negotiations - know what you have to offer, maybe you have flexible working which is still high in demand and some would be happy to give up some salary for more ability to work from home.

Outsource - consider outsourcing aspects of your hiring process to a hiring partner to reduce some costs and access specialised expertise.

Knowledge Gaps

Maybe you’ve been involved in bits of recruitment before, but never the whole kitten-caboodle (do people still say that?). You may need additional knowledge in order to make informed decisions and make the most of your recruitment process.

Some ways you can gain the knowledge you lack:

Attend Training - there are resources out there to sit and attend workshops and training events on recruitment, it’s a great way to learn what you need to know, but sometimes harder to put it directly into practice.

Get a Hiring Partner - getting expert advice to help you all along the journey not only gives you knowledge available to support you any time, but also makes sure you don’t slip into pitfalls.

Stay informed - sign up for my blog, or other good resources to keep up to date on industry trends and legal changes that affect recruitment.

Get the Confidence You Need

Overcoming self-doubt and insecurity in recruitment is critical to making great decisions. If you find yourself falling into the pit of second-guessing your decisions, pausing before taking action or feeling deeply the fear of making mistakes, this may be impacting the effectiveness of your recruitment process.

Tips for overcoming your self-doubt:

Get feedback - talk to experienced colleagues, mentors or industry experts (like me) to get feedback on your approach to recruitment or a decision, this will help you to validate your plans.

Trust your instincts - you know your business needs better than anyone else, if your gut is telling you yes or no, trust that it has enough experience to steer you in the right direction.

Get okay with mistakes - no one is perfect, and no recruitment process is perfect. Mistakes are bound to happen, it’s how you learn and bounce back from them that will give you more confidence in the future.

So yes, the barriers you are experiencing can be real, but there are very do-able ways of getting around them. Take my word for it, and try some of these techniques next time you’re not 100% sure of how to progress and you’ll start bridging the gap from where you’re at now and where you want to be.

One of my greatest success stories was a client who felt they just didn’t have enough time or knowledge or time to do recruitment right, they worried about making mistakes and hiring the wrong person, because to be honest, they had made a few bad hires. The beauty was with some time and confidence building, we found where they were making assumptions about candidates that just weren’t quite right and got them on the right track. Now we still check-in and catch up regularly but it’s more so she has a go-to person when she’s just not 100% sure.

All that to say, when in doubt about having enough time, money, knowledge or confidence, Career Pursuit is your Hiring Partner. We’re basically your best friend with incredible experience in recruitment. Use our knowledge and expertise to your advantage!
